1 New Oxford Street

A refurbishment and extension of Commonwealth House at 1 New Oxford Street, a familiar mid-town London landmark. The nine storey prow clock tower of the 1939 building is an unmistakable feature on the corner of New Oxford Street and High Holborn.

Originally designed by architect and planner Henry Philip Cart De Lafontaine as an ‘ultra-modern building of imposing appearance’ the refurbished building provides 12,250 square feet of retail and 95,000 square feet Grade A office space for client TIAA Henderson Real Estate (TH Real Estate).

ORMS Architects specified 320 square metres of Reed Harris’ Selari conglomerate Stone in two shades for the main entrance hallway and lift lobby landings. A polished finish was selected to enhance the definition of the stone and provide strong reflectivity adding to the overall Art Deco feel. The main floor area was cut to bespoke dimensions from 20mm thick slabs which allowed for a large 1172x572mm rectangular format and corresponding triangles in the same dimension. The floors of the lifts cars were fitted in Selari Stone 12mm tiles which were bonded onto 13mm Honeycomb backing by Reed Harris’ Italian Stone fabricator to provide extra strength and rigidity. The stone was installed by Szerelmey, one of London’s premier stone contractors, to exacting standards.

The overall result is a floor which provides an amazing entrance to a stunningly well designed and detailed refurbishment.

HEALTHCARE

BUPA

Our Cliffstone limestone effect porcelain tiles were specified by TP Bennett Architects for the reception flooring in this private hospital as they provide an extremely durable slip resistant finish which requires minimal maintenance.

The client’s brief called for the reception to be a light and elegant space providing an exceptional environment and a first-class check-in experience for patients.

The architect’s selected a 1200x600mm tile with some pieces supplied in 50mm and 200mm wide formats to create a linear pattern . The tiles were cut by waterjet offsite to ensure that all the pieces were fabricated to exact dimensions for precise installation on site with a consistent grout joint.

This flagship boutique unveils a contemporary design where heritage and innovation coexist with the TAG Heuer’s universes: Sport, Lifestyle, Art & Music and Heritage. The decoration, based on the triangle of the TAG Heuer shield, has been applied throughout the store and inside displays, in shades of pale and dark grey and in smooth and perforated materials. These overlapping layers are a reference to the watch mechanism. The touches of red evoke the brand’s attachment to the world of motor racing.

University Arms Hotel

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio were designing the rooms for the refit of the iconic Cambridge University Arms Hotel, the bathrooms were purposefully based upon classic Edwardian styling, taking advantage of the abundance of natural light. Traditional White Octagon and Black Tozzetto flooring was combined with simple but bright 100 x 100mm White glazed wall tiles, laid broken bond and framed with a black grout. Reed Harris supplied nearly 7000 Square metres of tiling for all 192 rooms and suites.
To complement the wall tiles a 150 x 150mm black sculpted satin skirting was used in conjunction with a 20mm wide finishing bead which was created by Reed Harris as a bespoke product for the project.
This small but vital detail completes the bathrooms, and along with many other aspects of the design throughout the hotel have seen the design by MBDS put forward for a number of prestigious design awards.” Comments Katy Li, Senior Designer at Martin Brudnizki Design Studio.

Watches of Switzerland

The Watches of Switzerland flagship at 155 Regent Street is a unique three-story, 17,000 square foot store offers the largest selection of watches in Europe including luxury brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre. The overall design was created by Callison’s New York and London offices who collaborated closely with Watches of Switzerland to create an environment that would appeal to a wide range of watch buyers from watch enthusiasts to connoisseurs and collectors.

All the marble finishes were supplied by Reed Harris who worked directly with Watches of Switzerland and Callison on a 10 month contract to provide stone to exacting standards of quality and finish. “Having a direct relationship with Callison and Watches of Switzerland presented us with a fantastic opportunity” comments James Reed Sales Director “they had a very clear vision of what they wanted to achieve so that gave us real direction for the stone selection. We did two trips to Carrara in Italy to choose the marble slabs and let The Client and Callison really understand and appreciate the stone prior to fabrication”.

Three stones were selected for the different floors within the store, to ensure a very different aesthetic was achieved in each area. All the stone was fabricated in Italy under Reed Harris’ supervision and then carefully shipped to London for delivery to Regents Street.
